Android 2.1 To Be Pushed To Xperia X10 In Canada In November

Finally! According to Sony Ericsson Canada’s Twitter page, 2.1 is to be released to the Xperia X10 in November. My goodness I have been looking forward to this. So many more features available, 720P video capture being one as well as the Skype app which I would really like to try.

I am still looking for more indepth news and will post it when available.

Skype App For Android

Great! Skype has finally released an app for android. Just log in and away you go, with all your contacts, etc. in place.

Unfortunately for me it is for Android 2.1 or higher and I’m still stuck on 1.6, thanks a lot Sony Ericsson!

Samsung Galaxy S: How Does It Measure Up to the Competition?

This spring, Samsung introduced the Samsung Galaxy S, a super Android smartphone to rival the HTC EVO 4G, the various Droids (both Motorola’s and HTC’s) and of course, the iPhone 4. Versions of the Galaxy S will be making its way to U.S. shores this summer in four different form factors to all four major U.S. carriers. I was lucky enough to get my hands on the original European Galaxy S and did some quick side-by-side comparisons with the other hot phones of the summer.

Looks like Rogers is bringing in the Samsung Galaxy S with Android 2.1 onboard. And best of all (for my eyes and hands at least) is it has a 4 inch screen. Absolutely no idea what the price will be but this phone has some nice specs. I will need to get my hands on one though to really give it a yes/no.

What can we say about this Android smartphone? Specs. It has Wi-Fi and GPS. 16 bit 16 million color 800×480 pixel Super Amoled WVGA screen. Multi-touch. 5.0 mega pixel camera. 16 gig of internal memory plus microSD expansion slot (max 32G). It is light (125 grams). 1 Ghz. processor. And an FM radio (if you get tired of your own MP3 when you are commuting).

All sounds good, but as I say I need to see, touch, and use one to give a more detailed report. And I hope to do that for you soon.

WordPress app For Android Review

One app that I absolutely can’t be without on my xperia x10 is wordpress for android. If I see or hear something of interest at a convention or trade show this app affords me the tool to write and post an article about it right away. And I don’t have to lug my laptop to do it!

You can write or edit posts or pages, work with comments. You can even add media to your posts. Just a couple of weeks ago I was at an open house. I did an interview and got some pictures. I managed to write the post, including pictures and upload it to that blog all while I was using public transport. Efficient use of time right?

Really, if you like to blog on the go this is the app for you.

In fact I threw this post up in a couple of minutes on the skytrain. Just do a search on wordpress in the market and you will find this great free app. Or visit the wordpress site to download the android wordpress app.

Coverage Mapper Review

Coverage Mapper is designed to run in the background on your phone while you’re moving around, so that it can log the signal strength at various locations, for the purposes of generating an accurate cellular coverage map. A screenshot of the main screen is shown below.

If the application says your screen is off, try restarting your device. Devices running Android 1.5 and 1.6 can have issues with detecting the screen’s state. If rebooting your device does not fix the issue, or you are using Android 2.1 or later, and you are still experiencing this issue, please request help on the forum or through the contact form.

Coverage mapper is a great little android app. It checks the signal strength of users android devices and maps where they are located. After wards this information is uploaded and maps are generated showing signal strength in locations all over the world.

You can set it to only use wi-fi so you won’t even burn up any of your data plan.

Very informative data that the cellular service providers may not want you to know.

It can be downloaded for free in the market just do a search for Coverage Mapper. The more data points delivered the more accurate the maps will be.
